POLITO

Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) is a leading university in Italy and in Europe in the field of technical-scientific research with over 33,000 students enrolled in academic courses of different levels, BSc, MSc, PhD, Master Courses (15% are international students). POLITO is a center of excellence for education and research in engineering, architecture, design and planning and it works in close cooperation with the socioeconomic system.
Thanks to its interdisciplinary outlook, POLITO is able to combine different engineering domains (Energy, system analysis and thermochemical) within materials science and environmental disciplines, to promote the development of new advanced energy materials. POLITO has expertise in the development, characterization and testing of advanced glasses and ceramics with functional properties for electrochemical and thermochemical processes; technologies for energy conversion and experience in projects related to solid oxide cells; expertise in waste materials valorisation and recycling according to Circular Economy principles.

Role in BEST4Hy

  • Development and optimization of a recycling technology of the anode Ni and YSZ recovery will be done at lab scale based on the combination of hydrothermal and hydrometallurgical pathways. Validation of a pilot plant up to TRL5, in efficient and cost-effective scaled-up continuous process, from the end of life to the valorisation of the Ni and YSZ recovered materials will be achieved.
  • Identification of novel EoL processes for LSC cathode based on selective recover of lanthanum (rare earth and expensive metal) and cobalt (as critical raw material)
  • Preparation of LSC materials including recycled La- and Co-containing precursors according to manufacturer’s requirements
  • Validation at lab-scale of SOCF cells manufactured with recycled cathode components.
